CASE STUDY
Mobile Statelite Services Association
When the Mobile Satellite Systems Association (MSSA) approached Colotera to develop their brand identity, they were at a critical juncture. As a newly formed association seeking to advance global mobile connectivity for Direct-to-Device (D2D) and IoT services, MSSA needed a visual identity that reflected their forward-thinking mission without favoring any single manufacturer or stakeholder. Given the range of companies and technologies involved, the branding had to strike a balance between neutrality and innovation.
The Challenge
The MSSA project presented a unique challenge: creating a logo that would represent the complex world of satellite communications while remaining approachable, professional, and inclusive of all members. The brand identity needed to subtly convey the essence of satellite technology—connectivity, movement, and communication—without relying on overt or clichéd imagery. Additionally, we had to ensure that the design choices, such as color palettes and typography, would resonate across a diverse audience of global stakeholders, from satellite manufacturers to tech innovators.
Our Approach
We began by working closely with MSSA’s leadership to fully understand their mission and the technological landscape they represent. We explored various visual concepts that reflected core themes of orbit, signal transmission, and connectivity, while keeping the design minimal and modern. Our team was mindful of the need to avoid any perceived bias toward specific technologies or companies, ensuring the logo would serve as a unifying symbol for all members.
After several iterations, we developed a logo that features the acronym "MSSA" with a subtle, elegant arc suggesting satellite rotation across the four letters. This design element conveys movement and orbit, essential characteristics of satellite communication, while maintaining a professional and timeless aesthetic. The typeface selection balanced modernity with formality, reinforcing MSSA’s credibility in the rapidly evolving tech space The opening in the capital letter "A" provided an ideal placement for the "satellite" representation.
The Result
The final logo for MSSA effectively captures the essence of satellite communication in a clean, sophisticated design. The arc, representing a satellite's path, adds a dynamic element to the otherwise structured typography. The understated use of color and careful choice of type ensure the logo is versatile across digital and print platforms, while the simplicity of the design makes it instantly recognizable.

In addition to the logo, Colotera designed MSSA’s website to further solidify their digital presence. The website provides a user-friendly experience, balancing technical content with accessibility to ensure that both industry experts and general audiences can engage with the association’s work.
